History of St Kilda

St Kilda is a part of the parish of Harris, in the county of Ivernessshire, and is within the area administered now by Comhairle nan Eilean, the Western Isles Council. Once the property of the MacLeods of Harris and Skye, it now belongs to the National Trust for Scotland. The group consists of four islands, the largest is Hirte, which is surrounded on three sides by high hills. This island before the 16th century survived on fishery, fowling and agriculture. From the 16th century to its evacuation in 1930, it was considered remote and isolated from the rest of the world. Its native language Gaelic was spoken for centuries until the 18th century before one or two people (non St Kildans) were speaking English language in this community.

The island Hirte/Hirta was surrounded on three sides by high hills, Soay, Stac Armin, and Boreray, 4 miles to the north east of Hirte.
