Neolithic People

The Neolithic People

Neolithic people were the first permanent settlers in Scotland, and were present around 4000-2000 years ago. We cant be sure that they settled right here in Tentsmiur, but there is evidence of their settlements in Fife. Neolithic people had a more settled way of life, where they farmed the land and began to domesticate animals too.

What did it look like?

It is likely that neolithic settlers would have lived in a sheltered clearing somewhere near to the sea. Here is a photosphere of a location that a neolithic settler might have liked!

How do we know?

Here is a Neolithic boat which can now be seen in Perth museum. This style of boat suggests that the Neolithic people did not travel very far.

Digging into the earth allows us to learn about what the land look like in the past and how it was used. This can be done by looking at and analysing pollen grains. These are little bits of plant which are well presevred in the right conditions and give us an insight into the past. We know that Neolithic people grew crops similar to farmers today from the records because cereal pollen has been found. This picture shows us what a Neolithic farm might have looked like.
