The parish of Häädemeeste is located on the southwest coast of Estonia and was originally part of Gudmannsbach Church Manor. The area’s long seafaring traditions enticed captains and shipbuilders, who built impressive wooden houses for their families. They are remembered on the many gravestones in the Häädemeeste and Kabli cemeteries. These memorials are comparable to commemorations that can be found in Helmsdale’s graveyard.

In the 1840’s, 80% of the population changed their Lutheran faith for the Russian imperial house Orthodox religion. It was hoped that the converts would secure pieces of land in return. In the late 19th century an Orthodox and Lutheran church were built to satisfy both congregations.

A larger number of shops sell traditional cuisine including a type of black pudding cooked with lingonberry sauce. In 2012, a mineral water factory was opened which allegedly has great restoring qualities for all those who drink it. Häädemeeste Museum, created in 1991, gives a good overview of the region’s history.
