What Did The Soldiers Do?
The Royal Engineers set up a camp at Tentsmuir in 1911. During World War 1 (1914-1918) Leuchars Airfield was built, with the RAF using Tentsmuir as part of their training groud.
During World War 2 (1939-1945), Tentsmuir was used for offshore and onshore training, with railway carts being used as targets for practice bombings. One of these carriages was found under a sand dune in 2010, after being buried for decades by the sand. The sand dunes grow, shrink and move around over time so who knows what else might be burried underneath!
During WW2, A group of Polish soldiers set up camp at Tentsmuir and heped the British Army build the defences to stop enemies coming ashore.
How Did They Change Tentsmuir?
You can still see many of these defences, as well as machine gun houses and lookout points. Now these lookouts would see more trees and sand dunes than invading war ships because Tentsmuir beach has grown and the forest expanded so much in recent years.
