Description: The candles in the royal apartments are made of beeswax. Beeswax is a rich yellow colour. It burns with an even flame and a sweet smell.

Beeswax was very expensive in the 16th century. Even Mary could not afford to have many candles in her room. People made as much use of the daylight as they could. It would have been very unusual to see the palace ablaze with light, even during the night.
