Painted Motifs on Walls

Location: King's Hall/Outer Hall

Description: Most of the walls of Linlithgow Palace are made of rough stone. The walls of rooms in which people lived were often plastered. This made a smooth surface that could then be painted. Some of the walls at Linlithgow Palace still have traces of plaster stuck to them today.

Important rooms might be painted with elaborate designs or geometric patterns. These patterns in the Outer Hall are based on popular designs by a 16th century Italian artist called Pellegrini.
