A drawing from 1847 tells us the entrance was once blocked and may have been used as a pantry. |
PantryLocation: Great Hall
Description:
This pantry was once the first floor entrance to the Great Hall. It was probably created by James IV in the early 16th century. A flight of wooden steps led up to it from the courtyard. No trace of these steps remain today. It was blocked up again and turned into a pantry in the 1530s.
Archaeologists can sometimes work out the changes that have happened a building by studying the evidence that survives in the stonework. Drawings, paintings, photographs and written evidence can all help to complete our understanding of the past. Teleport to the outside of the pantry and see if you can find the evidence for the old doorway in our reconstructed model. |
