Pulpit

The chapel once had a Catholic altar. You can see where the back panel was held up with iron pins.

Pulpit

Location: Chapel

Description: Before the Scottish Reformation this chapel would have had brightly painted walls, coloured glass in the windows, statues of saints between the windows and a large and elaborate altar on the east wall.

In 1560, the year before Mary Queen of Scots returned to Scotland, there was a religious Reformation. The Scottish Parliament declared in favour of the Protestant religion. Dramatic changes were made to cathedrals, churches and chapels across Scotland. Religious images were over-painted with whitewash, statues of saints pulled down and coloured window glass smashed. Instead of an altar there was a simple central table. The Catholic mass said in Latin was outlawed.

Pulpits were added so that the preacher could face his congregation and deliver sermons in Scots or English.
