Organ

The organ at Linlithgow might have looked like this replica of an early 16th century organ.

Organ

Location: Chapel

Description: Robert Carver is regarded as Scotland's greatest 16th century composer of sacred music. He was born about 1485 and died about 1570. He was also a Scottish monk. Carver was influenced by continental Europe, so his work was unlike anything produced in Scotland or England at the time.

Virtually nothing is known for certain about Carver’s life except that he was a Canon of the Abbey of Scone. He may be the same Robert Carver who was linked with the Chapel Royal in Stirling. His Mass ‘Dum Sacrum Mysterium’ was sung at the Coronation of King James V of Scotland. All his authenticated music is preserved in the so-called Carver Choirbook now in the National Library of Scotland.

Teleport to see another gallery were a very different kind of music was played.

Our Linlithgow organ is based on a reconstruction of 480 year old organ. A 16th century soundboard was found in a shed at Wingfield Church and used to recreate the replica organ. This link lets you see more and listen to what it sounds like.
