This photograph shows the large stone house that stood on the property prior to its purchase by Hoagland Gates. The house would have been erected by Benjamin Bowen shortly after his purchase of the land in 1813.
Hoagland Gates during the later years of his life. This photograph was probably taken during the late 1930’s or early 1940’s when Hoagland was in his early 50’s and already suffering from the advanced stages of tuberculosis.
Hoagland Gates’ father, Charles Otis Gates, was the President of the Royal Baking Soda Company. The company had been cofounded by Hoagland’s grandfather, Cornelius Nevens Hoagland in 1866 and was the source of the family’s fortune.
Anne Gates (1921-2007) was the eldest daughter of Hoagland and Margaret Mackey Gates. Anne was born in Philadelphia but lived for 55 years at Broadlands. This photograph was taken in 1943, the year that Anne graduated from Ohio State University.
