Although the surrounding farmland began to be rented to other farmers as early as the late 1950’s, Hoagland Gates’ widow Margaret continued, with the help of her daughters and hired hands, to manage the core of the Broadlands Complex throughout the third quarter of the 20th-century. Jersey exported thousands of head of cattle. Prior to World War II, all were transported by boat. This is how Hoagland Gates would have acquired the best of his original breeding stock. After World War II, Jersey began to ship its prized bullas and cows by air.
