Beekeeping has long been a part of Latvian life. Natural hollows in trees were initially suited for beehives, while special holes for this purposes were cut in trees at a later time. Beehives were usually placed in fruit orchards near homesteads.

The buildings were grouped around the irregularly shaped courtyard with a dwelling house in the centre. Threshing barn was located on the hill, away from other buildings.
There were many buildings in the homestead because it was typical for Vidzeme to build a separate building for almost every household need.
Vidzeme Peasant’s Homestead was the first homestead, with which the Open-air museum was open to visitors in May 1932.

                <text>The farmstead reflects the life style of an average wealthy peasant of Vidzeme in the period from the later half of the 18th century to the first half of the 19th century.

Sēta raksturo vidēji turīga Vidzemes zemnieka dzīvesveidu 18. gs. 2. pusē – 19. gs. 1. pusē.
Ēkas grupētas ap kopēju neregulāras formas pagalmu ar dzīvojamo ēku centrā. Rija uzkalniņā, tālāk no pārējām ēkām. Sētā daudz ēku, jo Vidzeme gandrīz katrai saimnieciskajai vajadzībai cēla atsevišķu ēku.
Vidzemes sēta bija pirmā, ar kuru apmeklētājiem 1932. gada maijā tika atklāts Brīvdabas muzejs.</text>

The plan of the building reflects the development of the typical Latvian peasant dwelling divided into three parts: anteroom to the left, kitchen and householder’s room in the centre and living room to the right.
Next to fishing, which was the main source of living, the inhabitants performed ferryman duties across Gauja River and were engaged in farming, but intensely shifted to dairy farming in the 19-20th century.

Dzīvojama Ēka bija atvesta no bijušas Rīgas apriņķa, Ādažu pagasta, “Cēlāji”; uzcelta 1851. gadā. Muzejā uzstādīta 1966. gadā.

Granary
The so-called twin type granary with two equally sized spaces for grain and clothes storage was popular in Vidzeme. A closed-end porch is in front of the granary. Hay was stored on the top of the building.
Granary’s place of origin is Skulte, “Lauči”; and it was built in the late 19th century. Re-erected in the museum in 1966.

Vējdzirnavas bija atvestas no bijušas Jelgavas apriņķa, Šķibes pagasta; uzceltas 1814. gadā.

                    <text>Adorned with a porch, decorated pillars and doors the granary presents a building art monument typical for Kurzeme people.
In a grain granary there were storage containers for cereals, meat, honey, fat and other products, which were stored in jars and vats.
Clothing, fabric, canvas, cloth and yarns were stored in chests and cabinets of the clothes storage. In summer it also served for living.
When this granary was demolished, in its corners there were rowan cross and Swedish coin from 1730 1st era that was hacked into four pieces. People believed that dark spirits and thieves are afraid of the tree of light – the sign of rowan and juniper cross. The crosses drawn with the blood of rooster on the door were also believed to protect the building from the fire and envious eye.
Granary’s place of origin is Kuldīga, “Dižlīķi”; and it was built in ~ 1767. Re-erected in the museum in 1932.

Klēts bija atvesta no bijušas Kuldīgas apriņķa, Kuldīgas pagasta, "Dižlīķi"; uzcelta ~ 1767. gadā. Muzejā uzstādīta 1932. gadā.</text>

The decision about the establishment of Open-Air Museum was accepted in 1924, but its first exhibition - Vidzeme Fisherman's Homestead – was open to public in 1932. Today 118 folk architecture objects are exhibited in the territory of 87ha on the Coast of Jugla Lake in Rīga.
The museum collects documents and preserves the objects of folk building monuments of Latvian historical and ethnographical regions, along with evidence of the way of life and culture of the rural population, characteristic to the period from the 17th century until 30-ies of the 20th century.
The museum researches, exhibits as a whole and promotes the monuments of traditional life, as well as educates and informs the society about the cultural heritage, work and daily life traditions and aesthetics of folks who have lived in the territory of Latvia.
At the museum you can:
- find out and learn about the history and development of crafts, technologies and traditions;
- experience the joy of dancing, singing, playing music and games;
- have a good time and meaningful day with your children, family, relatives, friends and contemporaries;
- observe and try out the old craft and taste the traditional food;
relax and enjoy being in nature;
- visit the applied folk art fair during the first weekend of June.
